The city’s dilapidated houses have been turned into a traditional Hangzhou residential community with grey bricks and black tiles
The location of Mantoushan community is where the previous Imperial City of the Southern Song Dynasty sat. It carries the memories of old Hangzhou. However, in the past decades, the roads are congested, the houses are old, illegal wiring and sewage overflow issues were getting serious. Using the opportunity of preparing for the G20 summit, we launched the Mantoushan Comprehensive Improvement Environmental Project with full respect of historical architecture with the theme of Common Life.
To maintain the sustainability of the old houses in old district is our principle. In the design process, we renovated the roads and the pavement to create a stronger historical character. We introduced local reliefs and elegant coloured paintings to recall people’s memory about Hangzhou and the Southern Song Dynasty culture. The project has restored the dilapidated houses as traditional looking Hangzhou houses with grey brick walls and black tiles. Meanwhile, it retains the city lifestyle of Hangzhou back in the old days with the charm of an ancient cultural atmosphere. It is a success case in integrating modern reality with history in a unique scene in Hangzhou.
